Nevada State Capital Building: Open Skies

Posted by Boomer | Old Nevada | Saturday 23 May 2009 7:49 am

This is the fifth in the series of blog posts that present the the Nevada State Capital Building in all of its yesteryear glory. In the previous posts, you got a sense of of what the Capital Building looked like just before its deconstruction. Today, we open the interior to the skies. Again, no narrative because the pictures pretty much speak for themselves.

After wrestling all day with an APA-formatted paper on a subject I know zip about, I had to hit the road and it was, in the beginning anyway, going to be a short ride to the store and back. The afternoon wind was up and the high yesterday was 94 (100+ on the bike computer).

As is the habit now, I took a quick spin up the Lakeview Grade where I’ll never get tired of this view.

Back from a ride to Moundhouse and in a good place. I’ve done the ride a few times but it was rough and followed the same pattern: pedal a few hundred feet (maybe), then stop and catch my breath. Two or three years later, I’m twenty-something pounds lighter and using an inhaler and that made a difference today because I didn’t stop once (woot). In the interest of full disclosure, I was going grampa-on-a-walker speed but not stopping is a milestone for this writer (but enough of me).

Nevada State Capital Building: Sledgehammer

Posted by Boomer | Old Nevada | Wednesday 13 May 2009 7:56 pm

This is the fourth in the series of blog posts that present the the Nevada State Capital Building in all of its yesteryear glory. In the previous posts, you got a sense of of what the Capital Building looked like just before its deconstruction. Today, we break out the sledgehammers and get to work on the interiors. I can only imagine the joy felt by the construction workers as they got to forcibly disassemble the centerpiece of Nevada state government. And you’ll see here and down that road that they held nothing back.

Again, no narrative because the pictures pretty much speak for themselves but you’ll note in some of these pictures that metal diagonal bars appear as the wreckage evolves. I suspect those serve as the foundation for the earthquake braces that would eventually shore up the exterior of the building. Since the Capital was around a century old at the time of these pictures, I’m guessing they also served to hold up the walls since everything inside was ripped out and/or came down, as you’ll see in future posts.
