Nevada State Capital Building: Sledgehammer

Posted by Boomer | Old Nevada | Wednesday 13 May 2009 7:56 pm

This is the fourth in the series of blog posts that present the the Nevada State Capital Building in all of its yesteryear glory. In the previous posts, you got a sense of of what the Capital Building looked like just before its deconstruction. Today, we break out the sledgehammers and get to work on the interiors. I can only imagine the joy felt by the construction workers as they got to forcibly disassemble the centerpiece of Nevada state government. And you’ll see here and down that road that they held nothing back.

Again, no narrative because the pictures pretty much speak for themselves but you’ll note in some of these pictures that metal diagonal bars appear as the wreckage evolves. I suspect those serve as the foundation for the earthquake braces that would eventually shore up the exterior of the building. Since the Capital was around a century old at the time of these pictures, I’m guessing they also served to hold up the walls since everything inside was ripped out and/or came down, as you’ll see in future posts.

First post: Yo Old Capital Building.
Second post: The Three Branches.
Third post: The Interior (before).

Please remember to credit the Nevada State Library and Archives if you use these pictures and, as always, the facts in this series are derived from my weak memory so I welcome any and all corrections and recollections of those days gone by. Coming up soon: there was nothing left when they were done.
