We Are SO Backwards

Here we go again.

The 74th biennial session of the Nevada Legislature opened yesterday, which means we po’ ol’ Jethroes here in the hind end of the Silver State must deal with an influx of our more metropolitan brothers and sisters from Clark County.

And their cutting-edge reporters, like J. Patrick Coolican (can that be a real name?) from the Las Vegas Sun, who set down his latte long enough to do an no-holds-barred expose of Nevada’s state capitol (sarcasm, folks).  For your viewing pleasure, here’s a summary with a few observations:

- Las Vegas is glamourous.  Carson is not.
- Our coffee batistas have character, tattooes, and star in community theater productions.
- Carson City has four or five Starbucks, though you wouldn’t know it from the article.
- Carson has a growth management ordinance.  Las Vegas has The Strip.  You choose.
- The security set-up at the old Capitol Complex does not stultify some folks like other governments.
- Just so you know, Carsonites knows what “stultify” means, but we prefer plain talk.  When we talk about LV snobs, we’re brave enough to say we “frustrate” them.
- We don’t have an adult movie theater.
- On the other hand, Las Vegas has something called “Secret Room Svc Guaranteed.”  It’s one of 1,027 LV entries in the Yahoo! Yellow Pages under “Adult Bars, Pubs, and Clubs.”
- Las Vegans apparently talk a lot about building neighborhood communities where people can safely walk the streets and get to know their neighbors.
- Carson is one.

Finally, J. Patrick Cooligan mentions that the St. Charles Hotel is a “fine old western building in need of renovation.” He says, “the place has the feel of a brisk methamphetamine trade.”

Does he realize that’s how the rest of Nevada views Las Vegas?

(Back to the word “stultify”:  Methinks the use of the word was not an accident.  The third definition from Dictionary.com is: “Law. to allege or prove (oneself or another) to be of unsound mind.”  Could J. Patrick be sending a subtle message to us hee-haws?)
