The hot spell in Carson broke this afternoon with a heavy downpour around 1:00 (lunchtime, natch), and it cleared out the heat and smoke and probably gave welcome relief to the smoke-eaters in the hills.

As God as my witness, the classified ad after the jump appeared on page E4 of the June 25, 2006, edition of the Nevada Appeal.
I am awaiting Liz’s blessing* to apply for said position. However, I suspect the answer will contain the words: “snowball” and “hell.”
But don’t we live in a great country?!
(*= I wait for her permission because I am (as you know, dear reader) totally kitty-whipped.)

Signed up for my annual Yahoo! fantasy football league with the traditional random draft because I like the challenge of chaos. This year got me both quarterbacks from last year’s Superbowl (Mr. Hasselbeck and Roethlisberger) and (ka-ching!) the best running back over the last three years (Mr. Tomlinson). The supporting cast ain’t bad. This is a good team.
Wish I could say the OFFL team, but I got the fourth pick in this year’s draft. It could turn out good if the players have career years…again…like they did two years ago. Well, I’d be happy with a .500 season, anyway. The Madison Wolverine keepers this year are:
RB: Edgerrin James, DeShaun Foster
WR: Andre Johnson
TE: Jermaine Wiggins
K: Jay Feeley
D/ST: Pittsburgh Steelers

Long-time readers have had to suffer through tales of woe when it comes to “Bob’s Biking Adventures,” so from here on, I’ll post the above bar to let you know where I am in my goal of 1000 miles in 2006. If the ride is interesting, I’ll stick the details below the jump. If blood is involved, there will be pictures like last time.
My thanks to bikejournal.com for the nifty Goal Bar.

In the midst of a mini-heat wave where Reno set record temps, northern Nevada is getting hit by wildfires touched off by dry lightning. In the local area, the Moundhouse Fire is scouring the hills clean of sagebrush and telephones poles just northeast of Carson. While buildings are threatened, the combination of ground forces and air coverage has kept stuctures safe for now, but fire officials are warning residents to create a 100-foot buffer zone around their homes ASAP.*
Check out this night picture taken by Joe Childs.
Here’s a good series of photos.
The Nevada Appeal and the RGJ have some good ones, too.

Edit: Just in from the Governor’s Office:
GOVERNOR DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY
Declaration allows early access to assistance for wildfires in Nevada
Carson City - Gov. Kenny Guinn today issued a proclamation declaring a state of emergency for the State of Nevada as a result of the wildland fire activity that has already occurred, resulting in financial hardship and depletion of resources. This declaration will provide the ability to obtain early access to federal assistance, assistance from other states, and allows for access to the state’s Disaster Relief Fund.
The State of Nevada is doing everything possible to assist those battling the large number of wildfires currently raging throughout northern Nevada,” Gov. Guinn said. “A significant amount of time remains in the fire season, and the early access to federal and local assistance will enable the state and local communities to get the resources necessary to address this current situation as well as any additional wildfires throughout the summer months.”

Here’s one from Bob’s “I Was There” library. I caught this show on the night of its two-hour debut and remember thinking it was going to be something special. Before long, every dude was trying to do Phil Collins’ drumline.
This show and Hill Street Blues revolutionized cop shows and put Jack Webb out of business forever.
And do you remember who plays Caroline? Her name and the ground-breaking video below the jump.

Here is Scott’s entry on the situation with pictures.
The former Wal-Mart in south Carson has been empty for years except for the time it briefly served as gathering point for Hurricane Katrina supplies. It balances nicely with the empty K-Mart on the north end of town.
Max’s been promising to build his casino for a while (or should that be “threaten”), and in the meantime, the city has lost taxable sales revenue from other companies that have placed legitimate offers on the table to buy him out.
He’s held out for his dream, which is admirable up to a point, but the generation that fell in love with the Clampetts is literally dying out and that hillbilly family has long since turned into a Trivial Pursuit question.
Nevada has two speeds when building new casinos and theme parks: lightning fast and not at all. As proof: in the time he’s acquired the property, Casino Fandango has created a mini-Peppermill on south Carson right across the street from his empty building, with a brand-new parking garage and promises of a digital theater and a housing development. Based on their success, I believe they’ll follow through on those promises.
Can Max get a clue? His dream has run out of time and he’s living an obsession.
